State Member for Shepparton District, Jeanette Powell, is inviting the people of Shepparton District to visit Parliament House on Sunday March 20 as part of its Open Day.
Parliament House in Melbourne opens its door only once a year to the general public and visitors can take a self-guided tour through the building and stroll through the magnificent Parliamentary Gardens.
The Open Day attracts in excess of 4,000 people who get to visit areas that are not usually open to the general public.
Mrs Powell said this is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to learn about the colourful Parliamentary characters who have left their indelible mark in the history books as well as finding out what democracy means to Victorians.
“The Open Day is a unique opportunity to see inside the historic building, walk the corridors of power and view the celebrated chambers of the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council,” Mrs Powell said.
“Visitors can see where their elected Members of Parliament work and learn more about the Parliamentary process.
“I encourage everyone to attend Open Day to find out more about their Parliament,” Mrs Powell said.
The Victorian Electoral Commission, Public Record Office Victoria and the Victorian Auditor-General's Office will all participate in Open Day by holding exhibits and information stands around the building.
There will be a range of entertainment for visitors, including the Victoria Police band, and a barbecue in the Parliamentary Gardens. Refreshments will be available for purchase in the Members' Dining Room.
Parliament House Open Day is from 10.30 am until 3.30 pm on March 20, 2010.
